South Sydney Rabbitohs win Charity Shield
The Rabbitohs won the Charity Shield thanks to a touchdown from Craig Wing which buried St George Illawarra with five minutes remaining at the Olympic stadium on Saturday evening.
The tense close fought encounter saw the South Sydney Rabbitohs score through Germaine Paulson and Yileen Gordon in the first half whilst Jamie Soward touched down for the St George Illawarra Dragons. Giving us the score at 12-6 at the break.
The Dragons took the lead in the second half, thanks to two touchdowns by centre Mark Gasnier in a 12 minutes spell. Rabbitohs struck back thanks to fullback Fetuli Talanoa’s score, however the Dragons were not done and Jamie Soward crossed for his second and with the clock running down things were looking good. But halfback Wing had the final say, twisting out of a Brett Morris tackle to bang the ball over the line and with the conversion take South Sydney to 24 points.
There was still a twist in the game as Wing completed his day by pulling off a desperate tackle on Lagi Setu with two minutes to go.
The man of the match was South Sydney hooker Issac Luke and some 25,000 spectators enjoyed 7 tries with 4 from the Rabbitohs and 3 from the Dragons, giving us the final score of 24-20
South Sydney Rabbitohs: 24 (Gordon, Paulson, Talanoa, Wing tries; Luke 4 goals)
St George Illawarra Dragons: 20 (Gasnier 2, Soward 2 tries; Soward, Hornby goals)
