Catalans Dragons reached the Super League play-off semi-finals with a surprise win over Challenge Cup finalists Huddersfield.

The French side deserved the victory with Clint Greenshields, Dimitri Pelo and Olivier Elima all crossing. Their defence was outstanding while Huddersfield looked short of ideas and wasted a number of good opportunities.

Catalans were 6-4 behind at the break, but went on to secure victory without dropping any further points but posting 12 themseleves to give us the final score of:

Brett Hodgson put the Giants ahead with an early penalty but Saints replied with unconverted tries to Paul Wellens, Ade Gardner and Lee Gilmour. Giving us the half-time score of 2-12.
Paul Whaturia gave the home side their only try just after the break, before St Helens closed out the game with scores to;Tony Puletua on 75 minutes before Long claimed his 1,000th Saints goal with a drop-goal and Gary Wheeler crossed just before the final whistle to give the final score of:

Brett Hodgson says Giants can win trophies

Brett Hodgson who has signed a two-year deal at the Giants, has been talking to BBC Radio leeds and during the interview said (quote)The Challenge Cup final is a big target for us this season, along with the Super League play offs and I am just looking forward to getting into training and putting my hand up to try and get a starting place.(end quote)

The Australian full-back arrived in the UK last week from NRL side Wests Tigers.

Huddersfield Giants have new Home shirts for the 2009 season. Manufactured by Kooga they are in red and orange with the University of Huddersfield main sponsor on the torso, Kooga in the middle of the chest, with the club motif on the left and Disposables UK on the right.

Giants v Catalans game free admission

Huddersfield Giants will offer free admission to their fixture on Sat Aug 16 against Catalans Dragons.

Chairman Ken Davy said: (quote)There is no catch to this one-off offer. Put simply, I will be making an major announcement at the half-time break which I expect to go down as probably the biggest announcement in the club’s modern-day history. In order to ensure that as many people get the news first hand we are cancelling all admission charges and making the game free of charge for all.(end quote)

Huddersfield Giants sack Sharp

Jon Sharp who guided Huddersfield to the play-offs last season has become the third casualty in the last three weeks from Coaches in the Super League as clubs who are not performing to the desired standard have clear outs.

Sharp’s assistants Paul Anderson and Keiron Purtill will take temporary charge of the Giants squad whilst a new coach is sought.
